B.S. in Environmental Studies from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC (1999), Masters of Science in Forestry from the University of Kentucky (2001), Ph.D. in Natural Resources from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2010).
Sunshine found her love of forestry as a youth through involvement in 4-H. In high school she attended the 4-H Forest Leadership Camp in Jabez, KY. Past committee member Deborah Hill taught her mapping over twenty years ago. The exposure to forestry through 4-H allowed Sunshine to decide she wanted to study forestry. Sunshine was awarded 4-H college scholarships and was awarded an assistantship in graduate school because of her personal connections with several extension faculty. Sunshine’s involvement in 4-H allowed her to find her future career direction, greatly assisted her in college both financially and academically, and introduced her to professionals in the field of forestry who were instrumental in her career development.
Sunshine coordinates the Wildlife Ecology and Management Major at Utah State University, Eastern. She teaches several classes including forest plants, dendrology, forest ecology, forestry field practices, plant taxonomy rangeland plants and others. Sunshine also teaches courses in wildlife ecology and ethnobotany. Sunshine’s research projects have included American chestnut, butternut, and black cohosh. Sunshine lives in Price Utah and enjoys backpacking, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, adventure motorcycle riding, and other adventures with her husband and two children.
