Even though I can and have tracked change in knowledge in the subject area the biggest impact I have noticed is the 4-H Members who participate learn to set goals and have to work toward that goal. My 2011 team that attended the Invitational had no intent of ending the 2011 Judging season short of a trip to National, which meant a commitment to the goal and working beyond the planned practice sessions. Also in the seventeen years I have coached Forestry Teams the number of students pursuing a degree in this field have not been that great, but those who take part in the program have a knowledge of the science behind issues (i.e. forest health –gypsy moth, hemlock wooly adelgid, Emerald Ash borer, ect are threats to our area) in that they understand the risk from pest, and the reason behind management practices. Thus as an informed citizen they can vote with a knowledge of the issues.
